Kathy Anne Werner is the daughter of a WWII Combat Veteran who suffered with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). She has the lived experience of both her father's struggles and her own secondary trauma reaction to living with her highly traumatized father. Kathy (as most of the children of WWII Veterans) had no idea growing up that her father's mood swing and fierce temper had in any way affected her. She went on to become a Registered Nurse and furthered her career as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at SUNY Stony Brook, spending much of her professional career attempting to heal veteran trauma- and understand how it had affected her as a child of a combat-traumatized veteran.

In Graduate School Kathy was awarded a National Health Services Corps Scholarship and she fulfilled her scholarship obligation at an Indian Reservation in Idaho. It was during her time there, that a Native America Vietnam Veteran invited her to attend healing ceremonies. These ceremonies were for Veterans and their families. Kathy participated in these ceremonies for 15 years and witnessed deep healing in the Veterans and a profound healing in herself. Kathy left Idaho and went on to work as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in the VA in Virginia, American Samoa and Santa Rosa, California. She loved working with Veterans and with the VA. However, she felt that Veterans and their families who participated in the Native American Ceremonies were able to heal spiritually, physically, and emotionally to a much greater extent than the Veterans she had worked with the VA.
